So, just as every flower has a stem, every brain also has a stem. Think of that stem has having the same function as that of a flower, just in reverse order. Its main function is to
- Bridge the lowest part of the brain (Cerebrum) and the spinal cord.
- Carry messages through your nerves to your brain and messages from your brain through your nerves back to your body parts.
- Control some of the most basic functions that keep you alive – breathing, heart rate and blood pressure
- Coordinates eye movements, jaw movement, the tongue and larynx, facial expressions, and the neck and head’s sensations and movements
What gets on Nerves’ Nerves
Much of this is accomplishes through the cranial nerves that pass through it. As well as all nerve communication between the brain and the spinal cord passes through the brainstem.
All of this makes the brainstem very important, thus damaging it could lead to very negative consequences. The worst of those injuries could lead to coma or a “progressive vegetative state.” These very severe types of injuries to the brainstem are usually those that happen to people who have suffered from strokes that effect the brainstem.
Because of the major functions of the brainstem, a stroke in this location could also be fatal, or it could permanently damage a person’s vision, speech, body movements, or sensations to pain. The amazing news is upper cervical chiropractors are able to locate and correct nerve interference in the top two vertebrae in the spine. That interference could hinder the nerve’s ability with the spinal cord and the brain thus leading to very adverse effects.
