If you suffer from migraines, it is important that you no longer just continue to live with that pain. The Journal of the American Headache Society reported in recent research by a team of scientists out of the Netherlands that people who have long history of suffering from migraines have a higher risk than other people of suffering from progressive brain damage.
Using high-resolution magnetic resonance imaging (MRI), they conducted the study on 28 migraine sufferers to examine their brains. More abnormalities were present in those patients who suffered from more than three attacks a month than those who suffered from less. They also showed the same results on those patients whose attacks started more than 15 years earlier than those who attacks started within the last 15 years.
Continued Migraine Research
While there is still research being done on the abnormalities that happen to the brain, there is research being done and hope given. Dr. Raymond Damadian, the inventor of the MRI demonstrated, using an upright MRI, that a misalignment in a person’s upper neck vertebrae can change the flow of a person’s cerebrospinal fluid to, from, and through the brain.
That fluid is what lubricates the brain and spinal cord, which can be an underlying cause of migraines and other symptoms. The National Upper Cervical Chiropractic Association (NUCCA) used phase contrast MRI to study a migraine patient in a case study and came to a similar result.
Migraines and Upper Cervical
What happens is that the first two bones in a person’s upper neck vertebrae become misaligned, and that misalignment places pressure on the brainstem. That pressure hinders cerebrospinal fluid and cerebral blood from flowing properly and causes intracranial pressure.
For many migraine sufferers freedom from migraines will begin with a thorough upper neck evaluation by a trained upper cervical chiropractor. This evaluation will likely include neurological, postural and three-dimensional x-ray examinations to determine the severity and type of misalignments in the upper neck. Upper cervical specialist can then correct this misalignment with the corrective procedure designed to address the specific misalignment in the upper neck.

Dr. Ankur Tayal and Dr Matthew Kittleson of UC Life Chiropractic Centre in downtown Victoria, British Columbia are Victoria Chiropractors and Upper Cervical Specialists trained by the National Upper Cervical Chiropractic Association (NUCCA). Their upper cervical clinic also serves Saanich, Esquimalt and Vancouver Island. They are uniquely trained to correct problems in the upper cervical spine (upper neck). This vital area is intimately connected to the central nervous system and problems in this area have been shown to be an underlying cause of a variety of different health problems, including migraines and other headaches, fibromyalgia, vertigo and dizziness, numbness and tingling and more.
