Thoughts for the New Year!

New Year’s Resolutions…

We’ve all heard of them, we’ve all done them.  Today I’d like to share one with you that I’ve recently come across, and really LOVE!

Stephen Cherniske is a very smart man out of Seattle and has spent a lifetime in the “Anti-aging” world, looking at different ways that humans can actively play a roll in maintaining their health and staying young.  The following is taken from a Facebook post from January 1st of this year:

“Stephen Cherniske’s top 5 New Year’s Resolutions

Happy 2014 ! Here are the 5 things that I believe will have the greatest ability to improve quality of life in the coming year.

1. Increase your muscle to fat ratio. Muscle is magic. Every ounce of muscle you can put on your body will confer amazing benefits. Muscle protects joints, strengthens bones, burns fat, balances blood sugar, stimulates immunity and looks sexy. BTW, the only way to maintain muscle is regular exercise.

2. Practice critical thinking. Be skeptical, especially when someone sends or presents you with “unusual” information. A polite way to respond to someone who claims, for example, that microwave ovens cause brain tumors, is: “Wow, that is unusual information. Do you have a scientific reference that I can use to look into this further?” Help stop webaoney. Do not forward or post unusual information without checking your sources. “The internet” is not a reliable source, but PubMed.org is.

3. Practice mindfulness. Multi-tasking is useful in certain situations, but adds stress if you remain “on” 24/7. Multitasking while driving, for example, is a growing cause of accidents, with over 11 million accidents reported in 2013. That’s 30,140 accidents per day in the United States.

Another place for mindfulness is your dinner table. When you eat, eat… and enjoy the aromas, tastes and textures of your food. Eat slowly and chew well, with gratitude for the food and those who brought it to your table. That would include every being that took part in creating the nutrients that sustain you, including the microorganisms in the soil.

4. Eat a wider variety of plants. I recommend adding one new vegetable to your shopping cart each month. Natalie and I provide a handy list in The Metabolic Makeover, Chapter Five.

5. Eat different kinds of protein. Protein diversification is important, as we are, after all, hunters and gatherers. Learn how to incorporate nuts, seeds, beans and whole ancient grains into your diet. If you are a vegetarian, don’t be a soyatarian. Avoid eggophobia and buy your eggs from local farmers who care for their broods. Avoid farm-raised fish, and understand that the lowly sardine is a treasure trove of quality protein, minerals and essential fats.

If you eat meat, vote with your wallet and support organic, grass-fed, hormone-free producers. The Metabolic Makeover, Chapter Five includes a long list of wild game meats that are available from reliable internet sources.

Consider hemp as one of the most valuable proteins on the planet. Watch the new (and valuable) trend of insect proteins.”

 

What a great list!

There is no doubt that the majority of people tend to consider diet and exercise as two of the main focuses of their New Year’s Resolutions, but it’s not the complete package.  Anytime we’re not considering the mind (as noted in #2 and #3 of Mr. Cherniske’s post) we are only working with a portion of the body.

This year, do yourself a favour and look to incorporate the mind into your plan around your health.
